Introduction to The Consumers Taking Action Series
by Dr. John Riolo
General Background:
I would like to introduce a new series of articles titled, Consumers Taking Action.
The author of this series is Jeanette Bartha. Jeanette is consumer of psychotherapy who recognized that she suffered more harm than good from her treatment and took action.
She filed a malpractice suit against her treating psychiatrist and the hospital where he was employed and obtained a settlement.1 Her series of articles will deal with the steps consumers need to take in the difficult decision of filing a malpractice suit. This will include deciding if they have a case; deciding if it’s worth the emotional toll inherent in such litigation; finding an attorney and moving on.
Jeanette's background includes a BA in psychology and she has worked in public and private sectors of mental health organizations (with children with autism & schizophrenia).
She also testified before the Colorado House & Senate to successfully ban rebirthing in the State of Colorado.
In addition she published papers with the False Memory Syndrome Foundation and with Stop Bad Therapy.com in addition to, other web publications.
She is now a freelance investigative journalist.
We believe she will make a significant contribution to consumer awareness as well and educating consumer –centric practitioners.
Jeanette and I made contact through an Internet discussion group, Freedom of Mind discussion list. This group deals with issues of recovery from cults. Psychotherapy is not a cult however there are many psychotherapists who behave much like cult leaders.
